About Laurel OB-GYN Associates, PA
Kathryn J. Stephens, MD, began her practice of obstetrics and gynecology as a sole practitioner in 1982 and incorporated as Laurel OB/GYN Associates, P.A. in 1990. During the past years of practice, she also employed a nurse practitioner, other physicians and nurse mid-wives.
As of August 1, 2005, Dr. Stephens has moved into another phase of her life and no longer provides obstetrical care or delivers babies. As a gynecologist, she loves to work with women who are trying to become pregnant, confirm their pregnancy, and help them find an obstetrician who will meet their needs.
Providing routine gynecologic care to women of all ages, from infants and adolescents to the menopausal mature woman, gives her the challenges she loves on a daily basis. The adolescent with problem periods finds the atmosphere comfortable and the conversations with the nursing staff and doctor to be reassuring and informative as well as confidential. Mothers take comfort in the fact that Dr. Stephens, as the mother of two girls, understands their concerns as mothers as well as the feelings and fears of the patient.
Providing contraceptive counseling and treatment is an important aspect of providing gynecologic care to women in their reproductive years. Many patients seek answers to their questions regarding contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, vaginal discharges or infections, breast problems, pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, heavy or irregular menstrual cycles, uterine problems and many more. As women approach the end of their menstrual life and move into the menopausal stage of life, different problems with periods, hot flashes and night sweats, vaginal dryness, insomnia, headaches, urinary incontinence, pelvic prolapse and osteoporosis are addressed and managed.
Gynecologic surgery is performed by Dr. Stephens on a regular basis. She is frequently doing surgery for abnormal pap smears, such as colposcopy, LEEP, laser of the cervix, cold knife cone biopsy of the cervix and cryosurgery. Endometrial ablation along with a hysteroscopy and D and C are performed to evaluate and treat irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding as well as post-menopausal bleeding. Many procedures are done via the laparoscope to evaluate pelvic pain, cauterize fallopian tubes for sterilization, treat or remove ovarian cysts or abnormalities, and even hysterectomies. Hysterectomies, or removal of the uterus, are performed laparoscopically, via an abdominal incision, or sometimes via the vagina, whichever approach is appropriate for the individual case. Dr. Stephens tries to inform the patient and her family of the benefits and risks of the procedures, and what to expect before, during, and after the surgery, and she works with many other specialists to obtain the optimal care for each patient.
Dr. Stephens and Staff are skilled and highly qualified to meet your needs. We strive to provide the quality healthcare you expect and deserve.
Please call us today for an appointment. We strive to provide care for women of all ages and stages with the same care that we expect for ourselves when we are the patient.
